When to use this
If you need to exclude many products at once — for example, 100+ items that should never appear in your recommendation widgets — tags are the recommended approach. Tags scale beyond the manual exclusion limits available in individual widget settings, and you can manage them directly in Shopify Admin or through any third-party tagging app.
Available exclusion tags
Add any of these tags to a product in Shopify to control where it appears:
Tag | What it hides |
Hides the product from all Boost-powered widgets — Search, Collections, and Recommendations.
Hides the product from Recommendation widgets only (Related products, Frequently Bought Together, Personalized, Trending, Bestsellers, Recently Purchased). The product still appears in Search and Collections.
Hides the product as a "bad match" — typically used to exclude low-quality results.
Hides the product as "out of scope" — typically used to exclude products that shouldn't surface in normal browsing.
⚠️ Note: Tags are case-sensitive. Use the exact format shown above.
How to add a tag to a product
Tags are added in Shopify Admin, not in Boost. Once a product syncs with Boost, the tag is recognized automatically — no extra setup is required.
For step-by-step instructions, see Shopify's guide: Adding tags to a product.
You can also bulk-tag products using:
Shopify's bulk editor
Third-party tagging apps from the Shopify App Store
The Shopify Admin API
When tags take effect
After you add or remove a tag, the change takes effect once the product syncs with Boost. Sync timing depends on your Boost plan. For details on sync frequency and how to trigger a manual sync, see How to use the Sync features.
