Our Rule-based merchandising feature allows you to create rules in our app's dashboard to change how a group of products is presented in search results. Each rule has different conditions to make precise, predetermined changes to search results. When the conditions of a rule are met, the display of search results that your customer receive is modified automatically. Product arrangement can be automated and you can display a group of products at the top of search results.

Our app embeds these rules into your instant search bar and search results pages to enable your store to run promotional campaigns, and implement other merchandising strategies.

For example, this feature can place all white t-shirts your store has at the top of search results because they are trending products, whenever your customers search for “t-shirt”.

You can have a look at our visual instructions on how to use this feature here.

Create merchandising rules

To create merchandising rules in the app’s dashboard:

  1. From the app’s admin, go to Merchandising > Rule-based merchandising.

  2. Click + Add.

  3. In the Rule name field, enter how you want to name this rule.

  4. In the Collections field, select one collection that you want this rule to apply to its products. You can skip this field when you want this rule to apply to all products in your store.

  5. In the drop-down of Ranking, select High/Medium/Low. Products that match this rule's conditions will be ranked in search results based on the level you have selected. For instance, when you select High, the group of products will be displayed at the top of the search results.

  6. In the Conditions section, select All conditions or Any conditions. If a rule has multiple conditions, choose Any conditions to activate the rule as soon as one of its conditions is met. Choose All conditions when you want this rule to be enabled only when all conditions are met.

  7. Under the Product attributes heading, you can set up conditions for this rule by deciding on the product attributes of the products that can activate the rule.

  8. Each row presents one condition. Click + Add new condition when you want this rule to have multiple conditions.

    You can set up conditions for Product title/Product type/Product vendor/Product price/Product inventory/Product tag/Date added/Date published.

  9. In the drop-down of Conductor, choose the corresponding anchoring and comparison operators. For instance, with the Product title, the anchoring determines what part of a search result must satisfy the rule: all of it, part of it, the beginning, or the end, etc. With Date added, comparison operators can be equal, not equal, less than, greater than, etc.

  10. In the Values field, enter only one condition string by which this rule will apply a consequence if a search result matches its conditions.

  11. For instance, with the anchoring "starts with", the search result has to start with the condition string to match the condition and be placed in a specific position. When you want to place all products, which start with "b" in their titles, in the desired position in search results, then you enter "b" in the Values field. When you also want this rule to apply to search results starting with "c" in their titles, you have to create another condition.

  12. Click Save and test how this merchandising rule applies to your store’s search experience.

Manage merchandising rules

Our app allows you to create rules to automate product arrangement and implement merchandising strategies. You can drag and drop the rules you have created to change their ranking order and edit those rules in the app's dashboard.

To manage the rules you have created:

  1. From the app’s admin, go to Merchandising > Rule-based merchandising.

  2. Toggle the button of the rule that you want to turn on or off.

  3. Drag and drop rules to your desired order. The higher up the rule on the list, the more importance and power it has on product arrangement in search results.

  4. Click Edit in the Actions column to customize rules. Don’t forget to save your changes.

Click the trash icon in the Actions column to delete the rule from our search algorithm permanently.
