What happens to your features when your plan changes

Understand what happens to your settings and features when your trial ends or you move to a lower plan, and how to get them back.

📖 When your trial ends or you move to a lower plan, features and settings above your plan are locked instead of deleted. This article explains what stays, what stops working on your storefront, and how to get everything back.

⚠️ This article applies to stores on GMV-based pricing. Stores on legacy pricing plans follow their existing plan rules.

Two kinds of limits

There are two reasons a feature or an item can be locked. Knowing which one applies tells you what to do next.

Type of limit

What it means

You have reached your plan's quota

Your plan includes a set number of these items. Anything above that number is disabled, and the items within your plan's limit keep working as normal. This applies to custom filter trees, custom range sliders, active merchandising campaigns, metafields and metaobjects, back-in-stock notifications, smart styling, and your analytics date range.

The feature is not in your plan

The whole feature belongs to a higher plan, so it stops working on your storefront. This applies to In-collection search, Collection merchandising, A/B testing, Personalization, Variant display, Back-in-stock notifications, Embedded bundles, and B2B sync.

Your settings are kept, not deleted

Whichever limit applies, your configuration stays where you left it:

  • All of your items and their settings stay visible in the app admin in view-only mode.

  • Locked items stop working on your storefront, so shoppers no longer see them.

  • A yellow Upgrade now! banner appears on the page, and clicking it opens your Subscription page.

  • When you subscribe to a plan that includes the feature, everything that was disabled becomes available again exactly as you set it up.

When your trial ends

What you keep depends on whether you subscribed before your trial ended.

  • If you subscribed during your trial: your access changes to the features included in the plan you subscribed to. Anything above that plan is locked.

  • If you did not subscribe: your access changes to the plan that matches your Base GMV, and your app admin moves to the expired state described below.

If your trial expires without a subscription

Only one filter option from the default filter tree on your collection page keeps working on your storefront. Everything else stops, which means:

  • The Boost instant search widget is disabled.

  • Filters on your search results pages no longer work.

  • No merchandising rules apply, including A/B test campaigns.

  • Recommendation widgets and bundles no longer appear.

  • Post-purchase offers, countdown timers, pre-order, back-in-stock notifications, and personalization stop working.

  • Product sync stops from the expiry date, so new products and store updates are no longer synced. The data synced before that date is kept and still powers the one remaining filter option.

In your app admin, the Home page opens by default and shows when your trial ended. Click Restore full access to open the Subscription page. Once you subscribe, your app admin returns to normal.

When you downgrade your plan

Downgrading works the same way. Any feature that belongs to a higher plan, and any item above your new plan's quota, stays visible in the app admin in view-only mode and stops working on your storefront. Nothing is deleted.

Get your features back

To restore locked features and items, subscribe to a plan that includes them:

  1. Click Upgrade now! in the yellow banner, or go to Settings > Subscription.

  2. Choose a plan that covers the features and quotas you need.

  3. Complete the subscription. Your previously disabled settings become available again straight away.

For help choosing, follow Choose a plan & start your Subscription.

⚠️ Embedded bundles: if a bundle is set to display As a product in the search results list, it changes to At the bottom of the search results list once your trial ends. After you upgrade, open your bundle settings to set the placement back.

💪 Your analytics data is safe. Data recorded before a plan change stays in your reports, and new data keeps being recorded. Only the date range you can view depends on your current plan.
